Shepard Fairey Solo Exhibition Sept. 16

OBEY GIANT ART would like to invite you to...

Shepard Fairey Solo Exhibition at Merry Karnowsky Gallery Los Angeles

RISE ABOVE

The title Rise Above is inspired by the lyrics of one of Shepard Fairey's favorite punk bands, Black Flag. Jealous cowards try to control... rise above, we're gonna rise above. Beyond just a Black Flag reference, "Rise Above" is both an attempt to reveal and skewer abuses of power, governmental hypocrisy, and loss of civil liberties, as well as a call for people to rise above these problems. Fairey's work encourages people who don't like the system to change it or work outside of it. Peace advocacy and the questioning of power and authority are dominant themes. Shepard Fairey's new body of work contains politically-charged screenprint, stencil, and collage mixed media pieces which use metaphor, humor, and seductive decorative elements to deliver provocative but beautiful results. These works blur the perceived barriers between propaganda and escapist decoration, political responsibility and humor with the intent of stimulating brain and heart/viscerally and intellectually.

Opening Reception: September 16th, 8-11pm
September 16th through October 14th, 2006

GR2 is proud to present the art of Bwana Spoons.

Spoons is a Portland-based artist whose freewheeling style was developed under the influence of underground comics, '60s rock posters, and Japanese rubber monster movies. Starting out with stapled-and-folded zines like My Friend the Micronaut and Ain't Nothing Like Fucking Moonshine in the early '90s, Spoons has become a regular in the Northwest street art and indie music scene. Endangered animals caught in mid-thought, kung-fu wizards with gravity-defying eyebrows, and swirling psychedelic backgrounds are only some of the elements found in the well-composed anarchy of his paintings and sculpture. The focus of Yellowfang! will be collaborative pieces illustrating a dark and scary forest with environmental overtones. Guest artists include: APAK, Tim Biskup, Jill Bliss, Andrew Brandou, Richard Coleman, Seonna Hong, James Jean, Will McCurtin, Kiyoshi and Maja Nakazawa, Martin Ontiveros, Justin Scrappers Morrison, Miles Thompson, Justin Williams, and Jessie Rose Vala.A reception will be held from 6:30 - 10:00 on Saturday, May 20. Spoons and various collaborators will be in attendance.
